Caring for the Environment
The Sydney International Regatta Centre features a wide range of environmental initiatives.
All buildings are designed to be energy efficient and maximise natural lighting and ventilation. Installed solar power panels save 0.6 tonnes of greenhouse gas omissions each year.
Water quality is controlled by a series of detention basins that receive water run-off from the local catchment. There is currently no link to the
Nepean
River . Waste water is collected and pumped into Penrith’s treatment plant to ensure there is no effluent run-off into the lakes or the Hawkesbury-Nepean catchment system.
The introduction to the lakes of 25,000 native underwater plants and 61,000 Australian bass help maintain the ecosystem. Areas of wetlands have been established on the shores of the
Warm-Up
Lake to provide habitat to water birds and wildlife. As the habitat evolves the bird population will thrive.
A planted stand of 170 endangered Eucalyptus benthamii, or
Camden white gum trees, is flourishing. In addition, more than 18,000 native trees and 12,000 native shrubs have been planted to provide a unique and tranquil setting to the venue. |
